FLAT OF THE LAND

It was in deepest, darkest lockdown of last winter when an invite dropped into my inbox from John Fielding, secretary of Lincoln Wheelers Cycling Club. The club, said John, was 125 years old in 2021 – which made it one of the oldest in the country – and they wanted to promote and celebrate this momentous anniversary throughout the year. And would I like to celebrate with them, with a barbeque and ride in July? If a ride did indeed sound like fun, the truth is that they had me at BBQ…

Fast forward six months and, as unlikely as it seemed in January when we were cooped up in our homes with dire news of the coronavirus pandemic pumping out of our televisions and continuing to traumatise the country, I’m clinking bottles of Peroni with John and his team-mates in the exquisitely turfed garden of his fellow Lincoln Wheelers, Derek and Pauline Bell.
