Wild Cardus

I enjoyed Andrew Green’s celebration of the double life of Neville Cardus in music and cricket (December). Occasionally Cardus could combine his interests, writing that in Sir Thomas Beecham’s conducting he ‘achieved the best square-cut since [Charlie] Macartney retired. But he should try to get nearer to the ball, and over it, while making his leg-glance.’

He had a sense of mischief, which could make him a difficult man at times, and occasionally his tricks would get didn’t appreciate receiving a review for a concert that was, in fact, cancelled, and sacked him. He was soon reinstated!
