WITH FULL REGULATOR
THIS time I am concentrating on the uphill sections of three recent main line runs with two very different locomotives: first of all, Tyseley’s GWR double-chimney Castle No. 7029 Clun Castle, working the Vintage Trains SLS 70th anniversary circular special from Birmingham and return via Swindon. This train celebrated the 50th anniversary of the return to steam in 1971 and the SLS trains running from Birmingham were organised by Arthur Camwell, who was the Midland branch secretary of the SLS. My correspondent, Graham Southway, sent me very full details of the running, which was excellent all day. Graham is an ardent‘steam only’ man after my own heart, and I quote him as he sets the scene:
“Back in early May I confirmed with Vintage Trains that there was not going to be a diesel on the rear of this train. I duly booked a table for four and we were looking forward to reacquainting ourselves with 7029. I was seriously unhappy when the news ‘sneaked out’ that due to the train being serviced in Milton Sidings, near Didcot, the diesel would be on the train to drag it back to Swindon for the return as it would take too long to run Clun around, haul the train back at 45mph, then run around in Swindon to be ready for a 15.45 departure.
