SIEGE OF ALESIA SEPTEMBER 52 BCE
ulius Caesar first invaded Gaul in 58 BCE. Over the next few years his conquests were unstoppable but in 52 BCE Vercingetorix, a chieftain of the Gallic Arverni tribe (from the modern-day Auvergne region of France) united the Gallic tribes to resist the occupation by Caesar’s legions. As soon as Vercingetorix came to power in early 52 BCE he formed an alliance of tribes who were wary of Roman domination., and he is understandably cagy about dwelling on a defeat (the Siege of Alesia is covered in ). Pursuing Caesar, Vercingetorix met with a reversal near the Saône River; he then moved to Alesia, capital of the Mandubii tribe, where he awaited more reinforcements to try to crush the Romans once and for all.
