HAVE YOU HEARD of a Britannia? Probably not. It features a weasly little 600cc air-cooled engine driving the back wheels of its bedstead chassis by friction drive from the flywheel, and dates from 1914. They didn’t make very many, but one raced in Longstone Tyres’ Light Car Race at the VSCC Oulton Park meeting.
Or how about a 1914 Bedelia? It’s another air-cooled car, belt-driven this time. The passenger sits in front of the driver, tandemfashion. The French used these spindly little cars as stretcher-bearers in World War One, adding a little extra to the dangers of war. A
