Peschak had an early life plan that would have taken him well into his 50s. Instead, he was derailed by a haunting experience while doing research for his PhD.

It centred on one of South Africa’s scourges: perlemoen poaching. In a lightbulb moment that was sobering rather than intoxicating, he realised that the academic articles he wrote on marine biology would reach relatively few people. So he threw himself into achieving greater impact by telling the story of imperilled oceans and their inhabitants with his camera, in the process becoming a photographer for the renowned National Geographic.

His books and exhibitions, nevertheless, use the written word to capture
