Te Anau is the base camp for adventure!
We have had the honour and privilege of visiting Te Anau, Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, Tuatapere, the Southland coast and towns, Queenstown and its charms and the incredible Central Otago to Dunedin many times over the last 20 years. The variety of scenery, activities, cycle and walking trails, rural villages and towns all have stories and history to captivate visitors on multiple levels.
Our recent trip to the South Island saw us stop over in Arrowtown for one night to pick up our good friend Rona, and giving Queens-town a miss altogether we headed down to Te Anau for a relaxing few days in this picture perfect Fiordland lakeside village.
The drive to Te Anau is picturesque passing alongside the Mataura River, through historic Garston and other rural towns, while parts of the Around the Mountains trail can be spotted along the way. It is around two hours from Queenstown, so staying locally in Te Anau certainly saves daily travel commutes as some travellers choose to do, probably not realising that a lot of the Great Walks start
