SILVER STAR, MONTANA

Virginia City, the seat of Montana’s Madison County, has gained deserved attention as a well-preserved mining town/ghost town. But the county holds another town whose mining history is worthy of consideration. Driving south from I-90 on state highway 41, en route to Virginia City, one passes through the sleepy hamlet of Silver Star (population 242), centered on Granny’s roadside country store and post office. One would never guess that a century and a half ago this was the second largest and busiest town in the county.
