TONGARIRO GREAT WALK HUT TO BE REBUILT

The aging Oturere Hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk is set to be rebuilt and expanded.

A DOC spokesperson said the 51-year-old hut is nearly at the end of its life and “isn’t at the Great Walks standard”.

DOC is contracting an architect to design a replacement for the 26 bunker but DOC wouldn’t comment on how much the new hut would cost. However, tender documents show the budget is around $1 million and construction should start in March 2023 and be completed
