Ayacht of many superlatives, 459ft Solaris is the largest private vessel that Bremerhaven’s Lloyd Werft has built by a broad margin. Widely reported to belong to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, she is one of the world’s biggest explorer-style yachts.

“We are proud that we have mastered this challenge,” said Friedrich Norden, Lloyd Werft’s director of projects and sales. “In many respects Solaris is a masterpiece. A number of very individual demands, some of them never experienced before in yacht-building, have been incorporated into this project.”

Marc Newson’s design has produced a smooth, clean hull with glass flush to the metal and bereft of ornamentation. An arch sprouts from the bulwarks amidships to encase the entire superstructure and there are curves everywhere – barely a hard right angle in evidence.

The yacht boasts more than 21,500 square feet of glass surfaces, including the biggest panes ever built into a yacht. She is driven by no fewer than eight MTU engines with a combined output of more than 14MW, for a speed in excess of 18 knots. The twin ABB Azipod system has a combined output of 9MW and constitutes the biggest such system ever installed in a private yacht.

Precious few additional details have been made available. Images posted online show two huge shell doors for tenders amidships, with three more creating teak-clad balconies further aft There’s a pool aft on the main deck with a glass floor that lights the beach club below. Accommodation reportedly runs to 36 guests across eight decks.
