Q I caught this ugly looking fish on a recent wrecking trip in the North Sea. Some have told me that it is an anglerfish, others have argued that it’s a monkfish. Which species is it?
DAVID HURST, BISHOP AUCKLAND, COUNTY DURHAM
: Both groups are correct; to a point. The fish you caught is an anglerfish,. However fishmongers and restaurateurs call this species monkfish. In angling and biological terms monkfish, , is an entirely different species, which are also often referred to as angel sharks, which are classified as being critically endangered. If caught angel sharks must be returned.
