WING ARMCHAIRS
As the chill weather of winter descends, our desire is for warmth and comfort, and few pieces of furniture are as cosy as the traditional wing armchair. The design of wing furniture is a centuries-old one, first seen in solid wood lambing chairs and settles, which would be set before the hearth of an open fire, the wings protecting the sitter from draughts. From the late 17th century, the design transferred to upholstered armchairs, when walnut or oak frames would be upholstered for comfort then covered with expensive needlepoint, crewelwork, or silk velvet trimmed with silk braid.
