THE United Nations COP26 event held in Glasgow has not resulted in a network-wide plan to reach net zero carbon emissions for rail operations by 2050. This is despite a Rail Decarb 21 campaign organised by the Railway Industry Association (RIA) who represent the railway supply chain.
Since electrification projects were cancelled by the Department for Transport following the cost over-run of wiring the Great Western Main Line, the RIA has launched an electrification cost challenge with the aim of delivering overhead line electrification works at a cost of £1 million per single track kilometre (stk), which compares with a figure of £3 million per stk for the GW
