he Indian Army entered Goa, then ruled by the Portuguese, on December 17, 1961—13 years after India had won freedom from British rule. The army cornered the 5,000-odd remaining Portuguese soldiers and made them surrender in two days. Goa, spread over 3,702 sq. km, became a part of India on December 19, 1961
