In April 2015 I received a plaintive email telling me that Noodle the cat had died. Exactly ten years earlier, Noodle had been a reluctant but effective prop in my portrait of actor Martin Freeman. After her demise, the cat’s owner wanted to use the picture to memorialise her on Facebook. I agreed, saddened by the news. That cat had really made the picture.
