The pheasant shooting season might have started on the 1 October but many shoots would have held off shooting until November. This could have been for a number of reasons.
If the shoot has partridges, shooting could have started in September and continued into October, letting the pheasants mature and become stronger flyers. Another possibility is that if a shoot is located predominantly in woods, there would still have been quite a lot of leaf left on the trees throughout October, making the shooting harder than it would have been a month on.
There is an argument to say that it would be better to put the pheasant season back a month if we could continue shooting into February, but I can’t see that happening.
