DYVIG, DENMARK

The Baltic is a wonderful cruising area, being relatively easily reached from British waters. On arrival, there are several countries to visit which offer varied cruising grounds, different currencies, customs and cuisines, and a plethora of harbours and anchorages.

Some may be tempted to overlook Danish, recommends it as ‘one of the world’s outstanding family cruising areas’. Many of us whose cruising is heavily influenced by the tides find it both strange and refreshing when sailing in Denmark to be liberated from regular consultation of the tide tables, but then come to realise that there can be currents which are much less predictable and have no published tables. In addition, charted depths may not always be what they seem, as the water level can rise or fall depending on the wind strength and direction. At times, this can be as much as a metre.
