Losing their edge?
IT’S A SIMPLE QUESTION, WITH NO SIMPLE ANSWER. IT’S
also one that’s being asked by an increasing number of cycling fans, especially those here in Australia. What has happened to GreenEDGE Cycling?
Putting parochialism to one side, there’s little doubt Team BikeExchange (set to be rebadged as ‘Team BikeExchange Jayco’ for 2022) has fallen several notches from the rarefied heights of years gone by. Lack-lustre results, continued sponsorship dramas and a current roster that appears to be short on both firepower and depth, sees the upcoming season loom asarguably the most pivotal in the team’s history, certainly since its very first, back in 2012.
THE NUMBERS TELL THE STORY
Detailed results collated by ProCyclingStats show 2021 was by far the leanest in the 10-year history of GreenEDGE Cycling. The Team BikeExchange men recorded just nine wins, total, leading to an official UCI team ranking of 18th. (With 16 wins, 2020 was the team’s second leanest return on record.)
