THE PELION RAILWAY
Introduction
n late August 1994 I was sitting having lunch with my son on the patio outside at a small hillside taverna at Milies near Volos on the Pelion peninsula of Greece when we noticed a small railway station below us amongst the trees. This was a surprise to me as we had planned a non-railway holiday so I hadn’t done my homework before we left home. Further investigation revealed a narrow gauge track. All looked in order and I was hopeful that there were trains running. There was no information available at the station so we returned to our car and drove down the mountainside and along the coast road where we re-joined the line and followed it until we reached Volos. At the end of the line we found a small makeshift shed housing four locomotives. We had found the Pelion Railway quite by accident! Recently I dug out some old photographs and have done some research on the line we visited all those years ago in an effort to find out more about the history of the railway and its locomotives.
