When London hair stylist Vidal Sassoon chopped fashion darling Mary Quant’s straight bob into a short geometric five-point cut in 1963, it became an emblem of the times.
The five-point, which accentuated Quant’s eyes and cheekbones, cemented her status as the queen of chic, the face that launched a thousand snips, copied around the world. For Quant, the hair was “the perfect cap” for the image of freedom she was trying to create for her customers; for women, it ended the tyranny of hooded dryers, rollers and harsh sprays.
However, the five-point still demanded maintenance. Quant needed weekly tidy-ups at Sassoon’s Mayfair salon, where he invited press photographers
