The usual expectation is that a sequel builds on the foundations laid by the preceding game. In , however, new series steward Relic Entertainment – of and fame – has dug a few layers deeper into the past. This, the fourth mainline entry in Microsoft’s long-running saga of historical realtime strategy epics, ignores the complexities introduced in the previous game almost entirely. Instead, it uses 1999’s beloved as its creative touchstone. There are enough new features here to justify the IV in the title – and to give you instead. But in many ways it feels like a reboot of that old classic, and a fine one at that.
