Long before Shingo Takagi was IWGP World champion—and years before the “Yes” movement—New Japan’s “Dragon” took on the “American Dragon” in South Philadelphia. Though never formally released to the public, the now-legendary bout won rave reviews from the 700 fans in attendance. Now, with a long-awaited rematch a real possibility, we offer a condensed version of the match coverage from our archives, first printed in the December 2010 issue of PWI.

MOST PEOPLE WHO saw it would say it was the best match of the year. Unfortunately, only a few hundred fans saw it. And those who didn’t most likely never will.
