MANY plants need some form of protection from the ravages of winter, especially if they are growing in containers. This is because while the tops of these plants may be quite hardy, the roots are not. These plants have evolved to grow in the ground, where the roots are enclosed in a large volume of soil that insulates them and they are not restricted as they
