Mecum Daytime Auction
After a year’s hiatus, Monterey, California, became the mecca of the vintage vehicle world once again, thanks to the renewal of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and with it a host of other celebrated shows and auctions. One such sale was hosted by Mecum Auctions, held on August 12-14 at the company’s now-traditional location on the Del Monte Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa.
Mecum has billed this as “The Daytime Sale” since 2009, and the Wisconsin-based company assembled 514 vehicles for in-person bidders and spectators alike. At the conclusion of gavel action, it was a European exotic that claimed the number-one sales spot: a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari, displaying just 131 miles, which achieved $3,410,000. Coming in second was a 1967 Shelby 427 “Semi-Competition” Cobra that brought $2,860,000. Third place was captured by the famed 2004 Ford Shelby Cobra Concept — codenamed Daisy — that realized $2,640,000, the same price achieved by a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C. A Full Classic came in fifth: a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Convertible Sedan that brought $2,365,000.
Rounding out the top 10 were a 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast that sold for $1,875,000; a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Berlinetta Scaglietti that realized $1,760,000; a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach that achieved $1,595,000; a noteworthy 1965 Shelby G.T. 350R Fastback that sold for $1,265,000; and a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT that brought $1,210,000.
