OPEN WHEEL DREAM LINDSAY WILLIS’ 1963 WATSON ROADSTER

THE STORY OF AJ WATSON IS A HOT ROD-TO-STARDOM TALE WHICH MAKES FASCINATING READING.

IT WAS back in the late ‘40s when AJ Watson resided in Glendale, California and worked for his dad while enrolling into Glendale College. “The guy sitting next to him in a mechanical drawing class was Bill Skulley who wanted to go and watch the hot rods run at Bonelli Stadium in Saugus. They duly attended and watched them race and got interested. Bill said, ‘Let’s build one.” And the seed was sown for a lifetime journey.

A bit later on, AJ was working at Lockheed Aircraft; he and his circle of friends began moonlighting after work to build a Ford V8 powered’ 27 T racing hot rod roadster and later a ’26 T. AJ ran the show and was affectionately known by his shop crew as “Head” as in
