From refugees to AFCON stars

The last thing on Ebrima Darboe’s mind as he waited, stuck in Libya trying to hustle for a place on a boat to Europe, was playing football.

It had been six months since he had left his home in The Gambia, where there was not enough food to feed the family and where his mother and three siblings were struggling to survive.

His father had died and, although only14 years old, he had little choice but to try to strike out for a better life, one where he might not only have opportunities and choice but also one that would allow him to eventually be able to provide for his family back in Bakoteh.

He and two friends had caught a bus first, and then vehicle after vehicle as a journey north merged from days into weeks and then months.
