Architect Jim Cutler knows a powerful vista when he sees one.
And he knows what to do with it. He should—he’s the last living student of modern master Louis Kahn, designer of Fort Worth’s Kimbell Art Museum and La Jolla’s Salk Institute, and also known as the spiritual father of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
“I took Kahn’s course in 1974,” Cutler says. “I was 22 and learned more in that year than the entire preceding years in high
