HISTORY OF STEAM SHOVELS

BROWNHOIST

Brown Hoisting Machinery Company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, by Alexander E Brown in 1880. It designed and built a variety of material handling machinery including railway wagon dumpers, special cranes for shipyards and docks, and grab and dragline buckets. In the mid-1890s it began designing and building locomotive cranes and by1919, a sales catalogue shows several models of steam shovels based on its range of locomotive cranes. At this time it was also manufacturing the patented Schnable dragline bucket which it fitted to its rail-mounted cranes.
