In 1966, the U.S. auto industry was busy sorting itself out into three main categories: full-size, intermediate and compact. At General Motors, Pontiac had broken the corporate edict of “no big-block engines in intermediates” in 1964 by installing the division’s 389-cid V-8 into the LeMans to create the GTO. In doing so, Pontiac set off what would become the “muscle car” wars that made the rest of the decade exciting.
