n the midst of the North Pacific some 1,300 miles west of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, U.S.-claimed Midway Atoll hosted a telegraph cable station and dockside facilities for Pan American Airways flying boats until early 1941, when the Navy began constructing an air station. After the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, the United States sent reinforcements to Midway.
