Saluting bravery
JOHN LEWIS-STEMPEL rightly salutes the bravery of Lt George Moor VC MC and Bar (‘). He rightly condemns the facile, view of the First World War officer class, peddled by some commentators. He is wrong, however, to castigate Wilfred Owen () and Siegfried Sassoon as ‘hand-wringing poets’. Both men endured the ghastly reality of trench warfare on the Western Front and were awarded the Military Cross for ‘conspicuous gallantry’.
