A fortnight after I met my husband, I impetuously ordered him an orchard of 95 fruit trees: 40 almonds, 25 apples (disease-resistant ‘Initial’, heirloom ‘Winter Banana’, blushing red ‘Liberty’ and green ‘Granny Smith’), 15 pears (‘Starkrimson’, ‘Taylor’s Gold’ and ‘Beurre Bosc’), five ‘Jelly King’ crab apples, five sour ‘Griotella’ cherries and five damson plums.
