Magical history tour

In early 2002, Peter Jackson wandered down the red carpet at the Academy Awards and met a Beatle. Paul McCartney was there as a nominee for best song. Jackson was there after his first Lord of the Rings movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, garnered 13 nominations.

This writer was there covering what was a banner period for New Zealand film and had cornered Jackson on his way inside. As we chinwagged, suddenly a real-life Beatle appeared behind Jackson. Neither of us had seen one up close before. Jackson made his excuses and a beeline for him. He wasn’t after an autograph, just a chat about the Beatles’ one-time plan to make a Lord of the Rings movie. If they had, it might well have ruined the idea for anyone else to do it.
