To work safely on, and especially underneath a jacked-up car, it is necessary to have a backup system to prevent a horrible injury should the jack’s hydraulics fail. The traditional method is to use an axle stand, but it is not always possible to find a suitable place to put one, especially since the jack is probably hogging the jacking point on the chassis. Haynes manuals advise the use of axle stands, but don’t suggest suitable places to put them.
