French composer, published by Durand in September 1898, was premiered by its composer at the Teatro Janeiro on 18 June 1899. He orchestrated the piece a few years later for the ballerina Stacia Napierkowska, of Polish descent but born in Paris, whom he was said to have found utterly charming.
