YOUR COMPLETE CANON GUIDE NIGHT PHOTO SKILLS

Lighthouses and astrophotography

Canon pro photographer Guy Edwardes, says that there are a few situations where it’s difficult to use a sky tracker. One of them is where the beams of a lighthouse project against the stars. On this occasion he reverted back to simply taking a single exposure using a wide-open aperture of f/2.8 and ISO6400, keeping his exposure time to 15 seconds, so that the stars remained sharp. Guy used the PlantIt Pro app to calculate exactly when the milky way would sit alongside the lighthouse.

Canon’s 6D Mk II is a great camera for night photography

Night for day

THE VENICIAN island of Burano is famous for its multi-coloured canal-side houses and leaning church tower. It looks at its best during the crossover light period, around dawn and dusk, and that’s also when you’re most likely to capture perfect reflections. At this time of day, the artificial lights will balance in brightness with the ambient light, enabling you to capture bright, but low-contrast scenes, like this. For about 10-15 minutes everything is likely to be within the dynamic range of the camera!

High-ISO shooting

, professional travel photographer, explains when shooting at night we often restrict ourselves to the lowest ISO and longer exposures to get clean shots. However, advances in Canon camera sensor tech means we can confidently shoot bright city lights hand-held by using high ISOs. No tripod required! Just meter for the highlights and use the dynamic range of the camera
