THE SPIRIT OF CARDRONA, by Desiree Reid-Whitaker (HarperCollins, $65 hb)

esiree Reid-Whitaker’s first taste of whisky was definitely inauspicious. In, Reid-Whitaker, with the assistance of local book editor and writer Kimberley Davis, charts how whisky – specifically, the demanding art of creating it – eventually became a fascination and the entrepreneurial driving force behind the establishment of her own distillery in Central Otago. The first spirit flowed from the Cardrona Distillery stills in October 2015. Within five years, its single-malt whisky was gaining international attention.
