What exactly is the Rebellion? It’s too big, too plush, too expensive to be a mere campervan. But then ‘motorhome’ doesn’t really cover it, either, especially with those Mad Max lights on the front. Its maker, RP Motorhomes, describes it as an expedition vehicle and, with the four-wheel drive, chunky tyres and impressive ground clearance, that sounds more like it.
Based on the seven-metre Sprinter van, technically an L3H3, in 319 spec, the test vehicle was the last of the 3-litre V6 models delivering 190bhp with buttery smoothness. It will be replaced next year by a new 2-litre, four-cylinder unit that Mercedes says has better refinement and economy.
But RP doesn’t just take a van – one that costs more than most fully fitted campervans – and kit it out. To the Selenite Grey panelwork it adds its own bodykit, Black Rhino alloy wheels and those chunky BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres. The look backs up that ‘expedition vehicle’ description, because this ’van is designed to go beyond normal roads and camp where there are no campsites.
THE ROLLS-ROYCE OF ’VANS
RP designs and builds almost everything for its motorhomes – sorry, expedition vehiclesO is inboard, of course, for weather protection, but RP also fits twin tanks, 100 litres on either side, to provide balanced weight distribution.
