LETTER OF THE MONTH

.270 Bullets For Deer

Q I have a couple of questions about my .270 Weatherby I hope you can help me with. The rifle shoots very well with the Hornady 145gn ELD-X - but unfortunately they are difficult to obtain just now. I do have Barnes 130gn TTSX and Hornady 130gn GMX. Could you suggest some loads to use on Tahr and deer? I have tried to find a recent reloading manual of yours without success. If you have other suggestions I’d like to hear them. Thanks for your help.

Gavin Ray

Barnes 130gn TTSX is a great bullet for big game of any size and I used it in my Winchester Model 70 in .270 Weatherby in Namibia with great success. I used two different powders in my gun - a charge of 73gn of AR2213SC and 75gn of Reloder 22 which turned up the same velocity - 3340fps. You should try working up from 3 grains below, but both loads worked fine in my Model 70. I like the Hornady ELD-X bullet and am loading the 110gn ELD-X in my Kimber .25-06 together with the Barnes 100gn TSX FB. Both bullets are shooting ¾-inch groups for 3 shots at 100yd. My last reloading manual sold out
