It wasn’t many years ago that it was completely normal to have parties all weekend long in the paddock, for riders to get drunk the night before the races, and you might even see the odd rider smoking a fag on the start line. We’re talking 20 years ago, maybe even 15... the likes of Sean Emmett would have thought nothing of that and it made no difference to their results – it was the norm for that day and age. What on earth changed? The bikes got more evenly matched, control tyres and rules appeared, and the racing got a lot closer... that’s what!
