CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE

THE SECRET LIFE OF FISH

£17

Doug Mackay-Hope, Ivy Press

Doug Mackay-Hope is an executive producer at the BBC’s Natural History Unit, and an illustrator who admits that his charming watercolours may not be scientifically accurate but are ‘an attempt to capture the character of each fish’. This may be mission impossible but Mackay-Hope’s studies of 50 widely varied fish species are consistently interesting and surprising. His book combines unanswered questions with fascinating facts and a sense of wonder that such mysteries exist. A lovely gift.

RESCUING TITANIC

£15

Flora Delargy, Wide Eyed Editions

This is the first narrative picture book from Flora Delargy, a young artist from Belfast. The central character of her story is not the city’s famous Titanic, but the smaller, less distinguished Carpathia built in England at Wallsend. When Carpathia picked up Titanic’s distress call she was 58 miles away. Her Captain had to make a series of courageous practical decisions to enable his ship to exceed her maximum speed and dash through the icefield in the dark. Though Rescuing Titanic is intended for younger readers, I predict that it will be appreciated by all ages.

Technical Ketch To Schooner
People have asked why I decided to change a perfectly good ketch into a staysail schooner? It’s a reasonable question. The simple answer is that I always wanted a brigantine. Traditionally, a brigantine is a schooner with the foremast square-rigged a
