You can never be sure when the weather will change in the Hebrides and it can change dramatically many times in one day. In my first few years I had seen all sorts of different weather conditions. Enough to make sure that I had written down the compass bearings from Soay Bay to Elgol and back again, and then from the bay to the harbour and vice versa.

I had also roughly timed the journeys so that in the event of a sudden mist or fog while I was in the , I should at least have some way of navigating my way around if land was not visible.
