f Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia is the birthplace of the country’s vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture, then Salvador is its epicentre. This was one of the largest slave ports in the Americas, and the African influence runs deep here, be it in the flavours of the food or the rhythms of its drums. Music is a proud expression of Salvador’s heritage, and (street bands) are making up for lost time a er this year’s Carnival was cancelled, with preparations underway for its return next February.
