“If you only go to the gym once a month you aren’t going to build any muscle, and it’s the same with photography,” Ben told Rod as they stood at the foot of the sloping hills on Cherhill Down, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the county of Wiltshire in south-west England. “If you get out with your camera three times a week, you’ll improve. And today we’ll be trying a few exercises that will help you develop your ‘photography muscles’.”
“Lead the way,” said Rod as he shouldered his bag. “We’ll be heading up in a minute,” said Ben, “just as soon as I’ve set up your first challenge.” He produced a mobile phone from his pocket and set a three-minute alarm. “As soon as the alarm goes off, you’ve got to stop and take a photo. We’ll do this every three minutes until we’ve reached the top.”
Alarm bells
An intrigued Rod readied his Nikon Z 7 and attached his Z 24-70mm f/4 S. “Good choice,” said Ben. “The zoom range will give you a little versatility, since you can only move in the immediate vicinity once we’ve stopped.”
