DANCE MACABRE
From a single anchored thread
I swing with death defying ease,
until attached I’m set adrift
suspended on a high trapeze.
Once secured my dance begins
with tresses from a spinneret,
in silver silk more fine than hair
I weave a geometric net.
Dexterous yet inelegant
I orchestrate strong complex lines,
the speed of these ungainly legs
belies its intricate design.
Scintillating sticky beads
embellish this artistic feat,
attracting unsuspecting prey;
my dance macabre is complete.
Now I wait, vibrate its strings
relying on harmonic tunes,
life’s buzz is silenced, quickly stilled
all victims neatly wrapped, cocooned.
Then a simple sweep of hand
completely devastates my web;
I swing with death defying ease
