The idea generation game: Part two

In this piece, we’ll be continuing on from last month’s smorgasbord of writing prompts with our second part – here are another fifty ideas to kickstart that creativity!

Find inspiration for new writing in any genre with these creative prompts from Alex Davis

1 Change of programme

We usually leap to the word processor before anything else for writing, but how different might the results be in a fresh programme? Could you write a story on a spreadsheet or a series of slides? Would it be a traditional story, or somehow encapsulate the new programme you are writing it in?

2 Colour scheme – one

Try a different colour for your font – what sort of story might demand to be written in yellow, red, green, etc? You might start by typing up some words that come to mind when you consider that colour.

3 Colour scheme – two

Alternatively, try keeping the font black but making the background something other than the standard white. Consider the type of story to suit the shade, or begin with some word association with the hue itself.

4 The sound of music – one

Put on a favourite album as you write, something you know well. Create something in response to the piece – you could call upon the lyrics or the soundscapes as you write. Don’t worry too much about shape or form. You can free write or try to develop a poem if that suits better.
