You ran an interesting article regarding the lack of suitable ammunition for smaller bores (Is this the end for small bores?,13 October). One of the Guns on our last flight killed two corkers, stone dead, at a height that had the rest of us cheering our admiration. It turns out he was using a 28-bore. “Hopefully not lead,” I thought, but that left bismuth, as no steel loads are commercially available.
He was actually using home-brewed ‘duplex’ loads: 8g of Tungsten Super Shot (TSS) 9 topped off with 15g of steel No 4 shot. I had never heard of this mixing of shot types/sizes, but it seemed to be deadly. Drawbacks are scarcity of components and TSS being £70 a kilo.
