Dark circles, also known as ‘periorbital hyperpigmentation’, are the dark patches that appear under our eyes, particularly when we’re tired. They can make us look tired and drawn, even when we’re feeling bright and breezy. So let’s have a look at what can be done about them.
What causes dark circles?
There are several reasons why we get dark circles under the eyes. In many cases, this hyperpigmentation has a genetic origin. This feels particularly unfair, as these individuals tend to have dark circles permanently, and from a young age, even though we tend to associate them with tiredness or being older and having sunken eyes.
If you have dark skin and dark circles, these shadows are likely to be the result of hyperpigmentation in those areas of skin. If your skin is pale, however, the dark circles are less likely to be hyperpigmentation and more likely to be dark subdermal tissues (like fascia and blood vessels) showing
