• Well before Europeans settled here, the district was home to the Tayarinutipana people.
• The first Europeans arrived in when surveyor landed on Van Diemen’s Land. Travelling from north to south, he mapped sections of what became known as the , after Lachlan Macquarie, Australia’s fifth governor, first travelled through the district in 1811 and decided to name it after himself.
