NOT all that long ago, if you wanted to buy a second-hand watch, your first thoughts might have turned to the gentleman in the ankle-length mac, whose schtick began with the words: ‘Wanna buy a watch?’

The second-hand market was—or, at least, felt—dodgy.

Few authorised retailers played the game and still fewer brands legitimised it. Want a warranty with that second-hand watch?

Forget it. Stories of people burned by fakes or watches well past their sell-by date became the prevailing narrative.
